Preparing for Marriage in the Catholic Church

A Guide for Couples in Northern and Remote Communities

We are glad you are considering marriage in the Catholic Church. Your desire to celebrate your wedding within the Church is a sign of faith and commitment, and we look forward to walking with you as you prepare for this important step.

Because many of our parishes and missions are in remote locations and served by travelling clergy, early planning is essential. Beginning the process well in advance helps ensure your wedding can take place without unnecessary delay.

Start Early

Please contact your Pastor, Pastoral Leader, or the diocesan office at least 8–12 months before your hoped-for wedding date.
In the North, priests often serve several communities, and travel can be affected by weather and distance. Early contact allows time for preparation, paperwork, and scheduling.

What the Church Understands Marriage to Be

In the Catholic Church, marriage is a sacred covenant and a lifelong partnership of love and fidelity. It is both a personal commitment and a celebration of faith shared with the Church community.

Freedom to Marry

Before a wedding can take place, the Church must confirm that both partners are free to marry.

  • Previous marriages (civil or religious) must be discussed early.
  • Some situations require additional steps, which take time.
Being open and honest from the beginning helps avoid delays later.

Documents You Will Need

You may be asked to provide:

  • A recent Catholic baptismal certificate (issued within the last six months)
  • Proof of Confirmation, if available
  • Civil identification
  • A civil marriage license

Obtaining documents can take longer in remote areas, so it is important to begin early.

Marriage Preparation

All couples are required to participate in marriage preparation.
This preparation helps couples reflect on:

  • Communication and commitment
  • Faith and prayer
  • Family life and openness to children
  • Finances and shared responsibilities

In northern communities, preparation may take place:

  • In person with a priest or trained mentor
  • Through Zoom or telephone conversations with your pastor
  • Through guided conversations adapted to local circumstances

Mixed or Interfaith Marriages

If one partner is not Catholic, you are warmly welcomed.
The Church supports couples in mixed or interfaith marriages and helps them navigate differences in faith with respect and understanding. Some permissions are required, but these are pastoral supports, not obstacles.

Planning the Wedding Liturgy

Couples work with the priest or lay presider to choose:

  • Scripture readings
  • Prayers and music
  • Cultural or local elements, where appropriate
  • Place of marriage

Most weddings take place in a church but there can be allowances made in the diocese for weddings to take place at cultural sites which have been approved by the bishop, in consultation with local Elders. Weddings in the North are often simple and deeply meaningful, rooted in faith and community.

Civil and Church Requirements

A valid civil marriage license is required.
Both civil and Church requirements must be completed for the marriage to be recognized.

Northern Realities

Living in the North brings unique challenges:

  • Limited access to clergy
  • Travel and weather concerns
  • Fewer date options

Flexibility, patience, and early communication are key to a smooth process.

Our Commitment to You

The Church is not only concerned with your wedding day, but with the strength of your marriage for years to come. We are honored to support you as you prepare for this sacrament and for married life.
